How to Make Money From Your Hobbies

By Lorena Roberts on April 2, 2017

Everyone has hobbies they love — that’s why they’re hobbies! But most of the time, just because you have a hobby doesn’t mean you’re making money off of it.

In fact, unless your hobby is a neighborhood lemonade stand, I would say more likely than not, you aren’t making money off of your hobby. BUT YOU SHOULD BE! It’s so easy to make money off the things you love. Here are some suggestions.

Start blogging

Blogging can actually make you some money. Whether it’s through ads or working for a company, if you like sitting down a few times a week to write about things you love, this is the hobby for you — and it’ll bring in a paycheck!

Start by setting up a free blogging site through WordPress or Blogger. Once you’ve written some content, it’ll be easier to gain an audience and use your past work to apply for some paid jobs!

Sell your creations

Ever heard of Etsy? Create a shop and sell the things you make for REAL MONEY. I have some friends who have their own shops. Sure, it’s a lot of work, but very rewarding to share the things you create with other people. You’ll enjoy “going to work” because it’s actually what you love already doing.

Garden

Do you love getting your hands dirty? Do you have a BRIGHT, GREEN THUMB? Get a slot at your local Famer’s Market and start selling your crops! (Of course, don’t sell them all!)

Become a seamstress

If you know how to sew, you can easily advertise your services for things like hemming and simple alterations. If your prices can beat the prices of the shop across town, you’ll get much more business. Plus, you’ll always have things to work on to keep yourself busy. This could easily be an after work job … or maybe just on the weekends. You’d be surprised at what kind of money people would pay to have their things hemmed and altered.  Get to it!

Play an instrument

There are plenty of ways to earn money once you know how to play an instrument or two. You’ll be like Phoebe at Central Perk in no time! Land some gigs in some coffee shops and get paid for doing what you’re passionate about.

Additionally, advertise your services to teach and gain students who want to play the same instrument as you! Playing an instrument can be very lucrative between these two opportunities. You’ll be able to charge quite a bit for private lessons. And the better you are at teaching, the better your students get, the more they talk about how great you are, scoring you more and more students every year. Before you know it — this could be your full-time gig!

Become a gamer

Did you know that really good “video gamers” are paid big money to enter contests and such? Not-so-good gamers still have a shot, though! As long as you’re good at writing about the game you’re playing or describing it at least, go get yourself a YouTube channel! People love to waste time watching random gaming videos.

Grammar police

If you’re good at correcting the grammar of people who don’t know any better, get yourself an editing gig! There are plenty of sites out there that will hire you to be an on-call editor. You’ll be able to snag gigs as they come up. So the next time someone makes fun of you, you’ll have a legit comeback.

Photography

If you’re good at taking quality photos and you enjoy it, look into some photography gigs! It’s not hard to make an Instagram account and advertise your services. Babies, prom, weddings, engagements … you’ll be making so much money you won’t know how to count it!

Savvy social media

Are you a pro at getting followers or gaining attention on social media? Plenty of companies will hire you to give their profiles a face-lift. A quick Google search will match you with some social media gigs that you can easily pick up a paycheck for!

Graphic design

Do you have an eye for design? Don’t waste all that talent! Sure you’ll have to compete, but if you can pull above the pack, there’s some serious dough in it for you!

Be a handyman

Are you good at fixing things? Do you have a good reputation in your town? It’ll only take a few good reviews from customers to keep your name in conversation every now and then. Make some money off fixing things for people (cars, lawnmowers, or even the guy’s Wi-Fi down the street).

Public speaking

There are plenty of companies out there who are looking for people who aren’t afraid to pitch a product to a crowd. If you aren’t nervous speaking in front of people (like half of the world) this might be your calling!
